#4 Judith Hill
Even if we don´t pick a new artist to highlight every week we have the ambition to give you something as often as we can. If we like something old or new, we want you to get a link or a description/review.
Since late 2020 when Judith Hill released her first song from her next album, which has the release date March 5th 2021, we have followed her YouTube channel eagerly.
The latest video “God Bless The Mechanic” is getting us worked up and we can´t wait for the full album!
#3 Garrett Shider
The Say What crew analyzes and puts the album and some of the songs in a broader context. Listen to samples from his album as well as reference tracks by Bilal, John Legend, George Clinton .
#2 Marc Rebillet
This DJ is “Da BOMB” on everything!
Marc Rebillet is an american musician and DJ. He is an unusually creative and talented improviser and is “in the moment” in a way that we recognize from Prince’s smaller live clubgigs. Marc is also completely in control of his craft. He also does not shy away from being controversial regarding both explicit and political lyrics in the themes that recur in his improvised songs. The clip next to this is just a short example of how he carves funk together in 2 minutes. “It´s imposible 4 me not to fall in love with U baby”!
If you want to experience the real talent with Marc, you must see the fully improvised concert from Paradiso in Amsterdam! Do not get stuck and judge after the first few minutes, give it at least 20 minutes. Then you will experience how Marc moves through countless styles, how he implements themes from the audience, how he also sings fantastically, and not least the ever-present humor. A great talent and stage personality!
Listen to at least the ten minutes from 14 to 24. You then get an excellent example of Mark’s genius. How he builds a great R&B groove and interacts with the audience!
Or the sequence from 32: 30 where Mark succeeds with the trick of making a complaint about the neighbor’s dog into a kind of loving protest song! Unconventional, energetic, ingenious … it’s Marc Rebillet!
Or why not here at 46:20 – when gospel Marc takes us on a unforgettable creative soulful trip that also shows his great voice resources.
Enjoy!
#1 Marsha Ambrosius
Marsha Ambrosius is an very gifted english singer and songwriter and a former member of the
critically acclaimed R&B group Floetry.
“Late Night Early Mornings” is one of the most Prince-like songs made by anyone, without Prince himself being involved. It can in a way be seen as a tribute, but despite all the references, and that even “The Beautiful Ones” is sampled, the song is independent, strong and full of its own personality. Thus an excellent example of how Prince inspires other artists to find there own voice.
Marsha’s singing technique, the tasteful production, the sexiness, the linn drum machine… creates a hypnotic purple bedroom soul music. Is it “Do Me Baby”? “The Beautiful Ones”? ”International Lover”? Is it Prince? No – it´s Marsha doing her own superb take on the purple trademarks.
This song gives us shivers – every time!
Also listen to her stories about the meetings with Prince and the aftershows in his LA residence.
If U can´t get enough – also enjoy “So Good” which shows her incredible presence and voluminous voice. It’s sooo good!
Enjoy!
